Documents: Passport with expire date after the one of departure from the island. For some countries it's requested an entry permit. In addition, when entering you will be charged a 10$ fee and when going out one of 20$. The tourist permit has a one-month validity and for longer periods must be renewed before its expire date. All tourism agencies give the necessary information and are up-to-date.
Vaccines: There are no obligatory vaccinations to enter in Dominican Republic. The most common issues may come from a prolonged sun exposure (which here is very strong), hearing problems, or intestinal disorders. It is recommended to drink only water coming from bottles. The sanitary service is private and somewhat pricey so it's suggested to make a medical insurance valid for foreign countries. It is also recommended to bring the common medicines (for headache, flu, etcetera) from home because in some areas they are quite expensive.
Currency: The official currency is the "peso dominicano" (1 dollar=30 pesos dominicanos), however it's suggested to bring with you some dollars as well to pay taxes. Euros and dollars can be changed normally in hotels, banks or change offices. Visit www.xe.com/ucc to check the dollar-peso exchange.
Electricity:the Dominican electricity is 110V/60Hz and the plugs are "flat" ones so be sure to check that your electrical devices suit such voltage (usually all modern devices suit it, just check on their characteristics) and if not, then get a voltage transformer. For the plugs take an adaptor with you, which can be bought in any electrical store.
Clothing: It is recommended to bring light, summer clothing preferably in natural fibers (cotton, linen). Don't forget the sun protection and spray against bugs. A light coat also might be useful in the evenings out and to protect yourselves against the air conditioned, sometimes exaggerated!!
